Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Install Rupis, finish the short setup and start recording. Your data lives on your phone.

Is Rupis free?

Yes. The free version records payments, scans QR codes and gives you up to 5 labels with rules and budgets, all report charts, backup and restore, and app lock. It shows ads. Rupis PRO adds unlimited labels, longer report ranges, spreadsheet import and export, widgets, scheduled backups, more themes and no ads.

Which languages does Rupis support?

English, हिन्दी, ಕನ್ನಡ, தமிழ், తెలుగు and മലയാളം. Rupis follows your phone’s language.

Can I use Rupis outside India?

Yes, as a tracker. Paying and QR scanning appear only where UPI is supported. Elsewhere you can still log payments, import spreadsheets and use labels, budgets and reports.

Payments

Does Rupis send my money?

No. When you pay, Rupis opens your UPI app (for example your bank’s app or another UPI app) and that app makes the payment. Rupis never asks for or sees your UPI PIN. It records the result on your device.

Money was debited but Rupis shows the payment as failed or pending

Your UPI app and bank have the final record. Check the payment there first. Banks usually reverse failed UPI debits automatically within a few working days; if it doesn’t arrive, raise a complaint in your UPI app or with your bank.

Why can’t I see the Pay or Scan buttons?

Payment features appear only in a UPI region. On iPhone you also need a UPI app installed. Everything else keeps working.

Why is my payment from a gallery QR limited to ₹2,000?

QR codes read from an image or shared into Rupis are capped at ₹2,000 for unverified merchants. This protects you from tampered images. Scan the merchant’s QR with the camera instead.

Importing payments

Can Rupis add payments automatically from bank SMS?

On Android, editions that include it offer SMS auto-import and Notification auto-import as PRO features. They’re off by default and every message is read on your device. If you don’t see these options in Settings, your edition doesn’t include them. iPhone does not allow apps to read SMS or other apps’ notifications.

Can I import my past transactions?

Yes. With PRO you can import an .xlsx export from your bank in Settings → Import data from xlsx. Each import can be rolled back.

Auto-import stopped picking up payments

Android sometimes stops background listeners to save battery. Rupis shows a banner when this happens. Turning off battery optimisation for Rupis in your phone’s settings helps, and you can run a manual scan to catch up.

Backup & new phones

How do I move Rupis to a new phone?
  1. On your old phone, open Settings → Backup & restore → Backup, choose a strong password and save the file.
  2. Copy the .rupisbak file to your new phone.
  3. Install Rupis on the new phone and open Settings → Backup & restore → Restore.
  4. Choose Merge to add to existing data or Replace to start from the backup.
I forgot my backup password

We’re sorry: it can’t be recovered. Backups are encrypted with your password, and we never receive it. Make a new backup with a password you’ll remember, and store it in a password manager.

Does Rupis back up to Google Drive or iCloud?

Not automatically. Rupis never uploads your data. With PRO, Auto backup saves encrypted backups on a schedule to a folder you choose. If you pick a folder that syncs to a cloud service, the encrypted file is stored there.

A restore went wrong. Can I undo it?

Yes. Rupis saves a restore point before every restore. Open Settings → Backup & restore → Restore points and choose Roll back.

Rupis PRO & purchases

How do I start the free trial?

Open Settings → Subscription and tap Try PRO free for 7 days. It needs no payment details, doesn’t turn into a subscription, and can be used once.

I bought PRO but it isn’t active

Make sure you’re connected to the internet and signed in to the same Google Play or Apple account you bought with, then tap Restore purchases on the Rupis PRO screen. If it still isn’t active, email us your store order ID.

How do I move PRO to a new phone?

PRO is active on one device at a time. After installing Rupis on your new phone and restoring your backup, use Move PRO to this device in Settings. Your old device then returns to the free version.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Android: Google Play → your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Rupis → Cancel.
iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Rupis → Cancel.
Uninstalling Rupis does not cancel a subscription.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Google Play or Apple under their policies. On Google Play you can request one from your order history; you can also email us and we’ll look at it in good faith.

Privacy & data

Can you see my transactions?

No. Your ledger is stored only on your phone and never sent to us. See the privacy policy for the few services Rupis does use.

How do I turn off diagnostics?

Diagnostics are on by default. Open Settings → Anonymous diagnostics and switch it off, or untick the box during setup. Diagnostics never include your transactions, amounts, payees or notes.

How do I delete all my data?

Clear Rupis’ storage in your phone’s app settings, or uninstall Rupis, and delete any backup files you saved. To delete billing records linked to a purchase, email us with your store order ID.

Why do I see ads?

Ads keep the free version free. Upgrading to PRO removes them.
